A middle-class income that's enough on paper, yet stretched at every turn

A HK$60,000 monthly income, supporting four elderly relatives plus one child — an equation that simply doesn't add up in the eyes of many Hong Kong families. Many office workers point out that after deducting mortgage or rent, what can truly be spent on children and the elderly is scant, so parenting is redefined as a game of actuarial calculation.

The structural pressure comes from a three-way squeeze: housing costs swallow nearly half the income, enrichment classes and private tutoring readily run from several thousand to over ten thousand dollars a month, and on top of that come elderly care and helper fees, all compressing a middle-class family's discretionary room at once. The stratification of the education market amplifies the anxiety further: elite schools and the tilt of resources make parents feel that without paying extra they've lost at the starting line, breeding a long-running tug-of-war over raising a child frugally or lavishly.

Against a backdrop of low birth rates, this tension between income and family responsibility is the real calculation behind many people choosing not to have children, or to have them late.
