Opaque dental fees, and cross-border treatment offers little protection

Pulling a wisdom tooth in five minutes, but the bill starts in the thousands, and pulling all ten readily surges into five figures — an hourly-rate calculation that makes many residents' first reaction anger rather than gratitude. Local consumers point out that dental fees lack transparent standards: the same impacted wisdom tooth can be quoted anywhere from a few hundred to over ten thousand dollars at different clinics, and a patient at the point of unbearable toothache has no room to haggle or compare, forced to grit their teeth and accept the nearest option.

The structural root is that dental fees have long had no public price reference, private clinics each set their own prices, and government dental service places are scarce with waits running into years, pushing all acute cases onto the high-priced private market. The price gap further breeds a wave of cross-border treatment, with some residents heading across the border to have root canals or extractions done at a fraction of the price; but once complications like pus or swelling arise, they find no one to turn to and are forced to rush back overnight to a local A&E, forming a dilemma where low price and protection can't both be had.

With neither third-party verification between fees and quality nor a clear route for complaints and accountability, the whole dental consumption market remains in a state of severe information asymmetry.
