Recurring pain, nowhere to turn — no triage and no price information

A stabbing pain in the right abdomen returns every few months, severe enough to leave the sufferer unable to move and unable to sleep in the middle of the night — and yet the first instinct is not to head to A&E but to go online and ask. Hong Kong residents report that this kind of recurring, non-acute pain typically loses its follow-up once endoscopy, ultrasound and blood tests in the public system come back showing nothing unusual: the patient is told to relax, while the pain persists.

Getting to the bottom of it means paying out of pocket to switch to private imaging, where neither the price nor the process is transparent. The gap in the system is that no affordable, trustworthy middle layer sits between public and private: people do not know which specialty to consult or which test to have, nor can they estimate the fees or the waiting time, and are left to feel their way using fragments of what others have shared publicly.

The result is that one group chooses to wait, letting symptoms that could have been dealt with early drift to an irreversible stage; another goes cross-border to the mainland for care, where the reports from the two sides do not connect and the same test has to be done again.
