Work messaging has no boundaries, trapping employees long after hours

Many local white-collar employees report that companies don't provide a separate work-communication tool; from bosses to clients to engineers, most communicate via personal mobile numbers and mainstream messaging apps, the number of work groups keeps growing, and even after hours you have to watch for vibrations and read receipts.

Hong Kong labour law has no provision on a 'right to disconnect after hours', and companies have not widely adopted enterprise collaboration platforms with scheduling, mute and formal record-keeping, so the cost comparison of private messaging versus email keeps general messaging apps dominant; binding personal accounts as company assets raises disputes over privacy, record ownership and handover on departure. This habit makes it hard for workers to maintain a stable work–life divide, and companies also lack a formal record of external communication for compliance and dispute handling — leaving local SMEs chronically behind the available tools on workflow digitisation.
