Roaming-SIM shortage makes inflated prices hard to read

A mainland roaming data card priced at just over HK$100 is asking close to HK$200 on Apliu Street and still hard to get, with shopkeepers even pressing customers to buy on the spot. Local consumers point out that after mainland telecom carriers tightened the arrangements for activating global data cards directly within the mainland, the grey route once used for cross-border internet access suddenly narrowed, and demand rushed in an instant to the few models that can still be activated in Hong Kong.

This creates classic captive pricing and a matching gap: product supply is hostage to a policy across the border that can change at any time, while at the retail end, stock shortages and information asymmetry give rise to speculative resale and stand-in activation as makeshift trades; consumers can neither judge which model still works nor find a transparent reference for price and authenticity. Overseas e-SIMs may look like plentiful substitutes, but the fund ownership, real-name and long-term-use restrictions behind them are equally murky, leaving ordinary users persistently passive on cross-border communications.

Reliable comparison and risk breakdowns of cross-border connectivity options remain fairly scarce in the market.
