Exploitative tech employers thrive, contract traps hard to spot

A jobseeker, merely for mentioning he wanted to leave on time to study further, was mocked to his face by the interviewing manager — 'go be a security guard, then' — an experience that struck a strong chord among IT practitioners. Many practitioners point out that within the industry, working overtime is dressed up as 'dedication' and 'normal', while poor facilities, unpaid on-call, and being fired on the spot during probation with no compensation are commonplace, and some firms even sustain high turnover by masking it with job ads.

This exposes a structural imbalance in the local tech job market: under labour law, probation, payment in lieu of notice and sick-leave clauses leave plenty of grey space, headhunters drive market rates down to close deals, and employees' weak bargaining power comes with no credible employer reputation or contract-risk information. When reading the contract closely and checking a company's background online depend on practitioners passing word and reminding one another, it reflects the double absence of institutionalised protection and transparent information.
